There is a common assumption that higher megapixel figures automatically mean better CCTV cameras, but this is a very simplistic approach. 5MP cameras provide useful image detail for many professional CCTV applications, whilst also having implications for bandwidth and storage.
The appropriate resolution will depend on what the camera needs to capture, the distance involved, lighting, lens and the wider system specification.
What does 5MP actually mean for CCTV?
5MP means the camera’s image contains approximately 5 million pixels. Dahua 5MP cameras in the ISET range commonly offer a maximum resolution of 2592 x 1944 pixels, although specifications vary between models. More pixels mean more image information within the scene, potentially providing greater visible detail when viewing people, vehicles, objects or activity.
This does not mean that a 5MP camera will automatically identify a person or object at any distance. The pixels available on the target also depend on the camera’s field of view, lens, mounting position and distance from the subject.
5MP is a resolution specification, not a complete measure of image quality, as sensor performance, lens quality, illumination, compression and positioning also affect the footage. Installers therefore need to consider the detail required by the application and the other specifications needed to capture it.
What difference does 5MP make to CCTV image quality?
Additional pixels can make fine features easier to distinguish and provide more image information when reviewing recorded footage. Digital zoom can be more useful because more pixels are available in the enlarged area, although it cannot create detail that was not originally captured. This makes 5MP useful where an installer needs a balance between coverage and examining detail afterwards.
Identification also depends on lighting, sensor performance, lens quality and focal length, motion, camera positioning and compression. Poor lighting can reduce usable detail, movement can cause blur, and the camera’s distance, height, angle and field of view determine how much of the available resolution falls on the target. Excessive compression can also reduce recorded detail.
Is 5MP enough for a CCTV installation?
There is no universal answer because the required resolution depends on what the camera needs to achieve. 5MP can suit general surveillance across residential properties, retail premises, offices, warehouses, commercial buildings, car parks, perimeters and other sites.
Installers should establish the required level of detail, viewing distance, scene size and lighting before choosing the resolution. A camera covering a nearby entrance may need a different specification from one monitoring a distant car park or perimeter.
A wide overview camera spreads its available pixels across a larger area, while a camera aimed at a defined entrance concentrates them on a smaller target. At night, appropriate low-light performance or illumination is also important. 5MP can be a strong general-purpose option, but it is not automatically sufficient for every installation.
Why resolution isn’t the only specification that matters
Sensor and low-light performance
The sensor affects how effectively a camera captures light, particularly as illumination falls. The Dahua 5MP Starlight Turret uses a 1/2.7-inch CMOS sensor and offers low-illuminance performance. A high-resolution camera can still produce poor footage if its low-light performance is inadequate.
Lens and field of view
Lens choice affects both the width of the scene and how large a subject appears. The Dahua 5MP fixed-lens network camera has a 2.8mm lens. A wider field of view covers more of a scene, while a narrower field of view places more pixels on a specific area of interest.
IR and illumination

Compression and storage
Higher-resolution footage creates more data, so installers need to consider bandwidth and storage. H.265 and H.265+ compression can form part of this decision, depending on the model.

What other features should installers look for?
Once resolution and camera format have been established, installers should consider features including PoE, IR illumination, Starlight or other low-light performance, WDR, H.265/H.265+ compression, human and vehicle detection, intelligent detection, audio, SD card recording, weather protection and IP ratings. TiOC or active deterrence features may also be relevant on applicable models.
